Since 1975, the weekend following Labor Day in Wayzata has been dedicated to celebrating James J. Hill, a prominent Minnesota historical figure and former owner of the Great Northern Railroad Company. Hill, who built the iconic train depot in 1906, played a pivotal role in transforming Wayzata into the picturesque tourist destination and welcoming community it is today. James J. Hill Days has become Lake Minnetonka’s most cherished tradition, earning the “Best Of” Lake Minnetonka award. For 50 years, this annual festival has united the community in a joyful celebration of Wayzata, complete with delicious food, fun activities, and family-friendly festivities!
Friday, September 6
5 PM- 10 PM.
Enjoy an evening in Wayzata with craft beers at Rails & Ales, the Friday Night Street Market, and food and drinks on Lake Street. Catch live music, logrolling, the Lake Minnetonka Carnival, and a Stuart Little movie on the Great Lawn.
Saturday, September 7
5 PM- 10 PM.
Start your day with the Coaster Cart Derby and enjoy a full lineup of events, including the Lake Minnetonka Carnival, street market, dog races, logrolling, and pickleball. Live music, guided tours, and a llama experience round out the day, culminating in a street dance and fireworks show.
Sunday, September 8
5 PM- 10 PM.
Wrap up James J. Hill Days with live music from Taylor Robert Band & Sam Graber Band, watch the T-6 Thunder Airshow, and catch the parade to end the day with a festive finale.
